Just a point to ponder…yesterday I was in the dollar store and saw pregnancy tests. I was shocked. The first time I bought a pregnancy test it was about $18. The second time it was still about $12 although 8 years later. I find it very unsettling to trust a $1 pregnancy test. Has anyone tried them and found them to be accurate? Could you ask for a refund if it was incorrect?

Would you buy a $1 pregnancy test from a dollar store?

  1. Absolutely not. I saw the same thing at my last visit to a dollar store, and pointed it out to my husband. Sorry, but I have too much riding on that one little test; I’m paranoid enough about the accuracy of regularly priced tests.

  2. I was shocked when I saw them and couldn’t believe anyone would trust them. I’ve had bad enough experiences with dollar store cleaning products. I love how they try to make ‘their’ brand look like a brand name.

I do shop there for many thing that make it worthwhile but fertility products? Ummmm no.

  3. I have used these $1 tests many times and they have always been accurate. Seriously it’s merely a strip designed to detect HCg hormones in urine. They shouldn’t be $15.

  4. Thanks so much for your reply, Robin. It’s good to know this is a good option, especially for women ttc’ing for several months. It can get quite expensive!

  5. I’ve used them a few times, and yes, they seem to be accurate. All it seems to be is a normal test without all the plastic covering surrounding it. Maybe they’re not quite as sensitive as those designed for people who just HAVE TO KNOW an extra 5 (?) days early, but they do work.

If I were in a situation to need a test again, I’d certainly use one of those. I’ve got better things to save/spend my money on than a stick to pee on!

  6. if you are trying to get pregnant and want to pee on a stick constantly like i did when we were trying, they can save you a ton of money!

  7. Yeah. I’ve used them and they are very accurate. You cant do the whole before your missed period but they do work.
Why spend so much money on something that is accurate as the next one and can be bought cheaply.

  8. When i first found out i was pregnant, i hadn’t realized i had missed my period, i just had a feeling & on a whim decided to buy one. There happened to be a dollar store two blocks down from my house.
The first test was positive & so were the next four. It took five pregnancy tests to convince me & it only cost me about five dollars.

  9. The dollar store pregnancy tests are actually more sensitive than first response. These tests are nothing but a strip of paper that detects HcG and can be bought for .25 a strip. You want to spend more on a test for what reason, again?

I counsel women who are trying to conceive. I’ve found over the years that the dollar store tests are the most accurate, give you a positive result fastest, and give you the least number of false positives and evap lines. Yes, I would use them.

  10. Yes The Dollar Store Tests Are Very Accurate! I Think Its Funny When I Think About It Now. We TTC For 11 Months So I Used Alot Of These Tests. When I Found Out I Was Pregnant I Used 6 Of The Dollar Store Tests Cause I Wanted To Use Them All Up! I Should Have Bought Stock In Them! LOL! They Are Just As Correct As The Other Ones Since All Your Doing Is Peeing On Them! LOL! I Did However Buy A Digital Just So I Could See The Word Pregnant On It Since We TTC For So Long! Just My Thoughts!

    Happy Peeing!

  11. i actually work at a dollar store “Dollar Tree” and they sell them, they’re kept right at my register. I will admit, i did giggle when i first saw them, thinking it was pretty weird to sell them for a dollar. but People buy the constantly. and i know people as well that have used them and didn’t have a problem. i’d trust them. It’s a lot better than buying a $10 one anywhere else and have it end up being negative. lol.

  12. Thanks Kalaina,
I’m convinced. I started this post completely sure I’d never buy one but have been converted with all the comments here.
    Cheers :)

  13. Absolutely nothing wrong with the dollar store tests, they are as accurate as any test that I’ve purchased for $15. Not to mention, they are so much cheaper when you are trying to conceive and are constantly taking tests.

    Good luck!

  14. I used the dollar store test with all 3 of my pregnancies. I found them very very accurate!!! I would suggest them to anyone. It saves you a lot of money that you can spend buy those oh so cute baby clothes!!!

  15. My dear friend is a midwife and a surrogate mother. She is respected in our community and I trust her judgment. That being said, she told me that the dollar store pregnancy tests are safe and I have used them with both my pregnancies and even twice when I turned out not to be pregnant. They were always accurate but just like any pregnancy test there is a margin of error. My friend also uses them in her pregnancies and has had good results. They have the same things in them and work just as well so don’t knock them just because you got duped into spending $17 more than you needed to! IN short, they are safe and cheap, why not use them?

  16. loving getting all the comments on this one. My initial fear of these being accurate is totally gone and I’d try them out in a heart beat now.
    Thanks all!

  17. Thanks for making this post! I didn’t even know dollar stores sold pregnancy tests. It sounds much better than spending all that money.

  18. Why wouldn’t it work? A positive’s a positive! They were just as accurate as any other test I’ve used.

  19. i wont use theyre wannabe sharpie brand markers. Shoupies. lol
who would be stupid enough to trust one of those

  20. No…I had 3 false negatives with the good name brand ones. So I dont think I would buy a cheap one, the only real way to know 100% is through a blood test.

  21. I wish we had of had dollar stores here in Australia while we were TTC. I went through so many tests!

  22. i’d rather use 18 one dollar tests than one 18 dollar test, surely that would be more accurate, lol

  23. Good point, Anonymous :) LOL.

  24. When my sister was TTC, she bought a couple hundred sticks at like, $0.30 a stick. So why not use the $1 ones/

  25. That sounds like a deal, Sarah!

  26. I had a friend who already knew she was pregnant and decided to try the cheap test just to see if they work. It came back negative! Not trying to knock the Dollar Store tests, but that’s the been my experience with them.

  27. They are accurate! I was 6 weeks and took a dollar store test.. came up quite obviously positive.. and sure enough I was pregnant considering I have a beautiful 10 month old son today. They are all the same.. no need to pay more.. but if you are weary you can always buy like 8 of them and take them all - still cheaper and if they ALL come up positive, well you’re freakin’ pregnant.

  28. I’ve used these in times i was pregnant and it times i was not. They showed me as pregnant first, when i was expecting my first child, and not when we were trying for our second, but not pregnant yet. They have been accurate for me. They are all the same and save you money.

  29. Yup thats how I found out :0

  30. Dollar store tests work just as well as the expensive ones. Especially if you are ttc and testing often. FYI: so do the generic walmart brand tests :)

  31. yes actually ive gotten a positive on one and i am 10 weeks pregnant

  32. While I haven’t ever used one from a dollar store, I have almost always used the generic from Wal-Mart. They’re usually about $8, rather than the next one in price being $18.
I talked with my doctor about this. His response was that you can get a false negative, but with a test boasting 99% accuracy (which I believe that all of them do - if not, that’s what you should look for) you’ll never get a false positive, unless you’re using it wrong.
This is certainly a good topic - thanks for the thinker. I saw a lot of cool responses - I especially liked the one who said she’d rather try 18 $1 tests than 1 $18 because surely that would be more accurate. HAHAHA!

  33. Totally! They use the same technology. I used the dollar store test to confirm my second pregnancy. Every economical. Save the expensive test to confirm the dollar store test. It’ll save you a lot of money of your TTC for a while.

  34. I used Dollar Store pregnancy test for my second child and it was accurate. I used 2 actually just to confirm :)

  35. all the ones that will use the $1 pregnancy tests are SMART! my best friends mom works at a clinic and when they go into the doctors office, they were using the same dollar store tests. So why would you waste so much money on something they dont waste the money on because they are just as accurate!

  36. They worked just fine for my wife and I! We tried 3 or 4 of them just to make sure that we were expecting, and they all came up positive! There isn’t anything wrong with them, but I would suggest buying 2 or three and trying them a few days apart. Also, make sure you read the directions! If you try to early, the test may be incorrect.

  37. My first reaction was- no way! But after reading through everyone’s comments, I must say I’m a bit more open minded about the cheap tests. Ultimately though, I’d still trust a big brand name in the end.

  38. I have 3 kids and I live right by a dollar tree. 2 times I have gotten my pregnancy tests there. With my first son I got a first response test where it showed 1 line and then 1 half of a line. So I went to the dollar tree to get a test cause I was short on cash and I got an instant positive with a dollar tree test. So with all my other pregnancies that all I used cheapo dollar tests! lol..

  39. Also, they now sell ovulation tests and I have had lots of people highly recommend those.

  40. Yes. They actually work. A friend of mine has two children and one on the way and has used the dollar store tests every time and they have always been right.

  41. I bought some test papers in China, every one test costs 2RMB, it means 0.25$ in U.S.A. You can use 1$ to buy 10 packs pregnancy test papers in China.

  42. I used the dollar store pregnancy test! It showed a positive right away.

  43. I’ve used them and they have been right. My only complaint is they don’t offer a stick to pee on. You have to supply a cup to pee in then use a dropper to drop pee on the stick. Kind of aggravating that way.

  44. OMG, don’t even hesitate! They are very accurate! Don’t get suckered into spending 14.99 each. I am pregnant now with my first and I’ve bought both. I actually like the dollar store tests better! It’s SMART girls…

  45. Also, my dollar store tests were accurate 3 days BEFORE by period was supposed to come. They are great!!

  46. Im like Tanya after reading some of the comments I will start buying the dollar store preg test for now on. I have been buying the pregnancy test with two test in the box for about $9.99 and they both came out negative. Now the other day I bought another one so all together I paid over twenty dollars.

I’m going to stock up on the dollar store ones.

    Thanks for the info.

  47. When you buy the 15 dollar tests, you’re paying merely for the labels.

  48. I PAID ABOUT $15 DOLLARS FOR A NAME BRAND TEST THAT TOLD ME I WAS NOT PREGNANT. WITH CONSISTANT SIGNS THAT I WAS PREGNANT, LIKE NO PERIOD, AND INCREASED SLEEPING AND EATING. I SPENT ANOTHER $15 FOR A PREGNACY TEST THAT SAID I WAS PREGNANT. SO WHY NOT PAY A DOLLAR AT THE DOLLAR STORE FOR A TEST. EVEN THE EXSPENSIVE TEST GIVE INACCURATE RESULTS, SO ITS WISE TO BY A DOLLAR STORE TEST TWICE THAN BUYING A $15 DOLLAR TEST TWICE. AND JUST SUM FOOD FOR THOUGHT. YOU DONT WANT TO BUY A CHEAP PREGNACY TEST THAT ALL U DO IS PEE ON. YET YOU WILL GO AND BUY SUM CHEAP FOOD FROM THE DOLLAR STORE. SOMETHING THAT YOU PUT INTO YOUR BODY. PEOPLE PLEASE BE WISE IN LIFE.

  49. Yes, they are accurate, however they are not as sensitive in the early days of pregnancy. I have used them a few times before while trying to conceive, and the only complaints that I have about them are that one brand was impossible to read with any accuracy. Aside from that one, they worked just as well as the 12 dollar ones, altho I admit to checking the first few times with an expensive one just to make sure.

  50. yeah i would and did and found out i was pregnant with my children with one. they worked just as good

  51. I have used them with 100% accuracy many times while trying and not trying to get pregnant. One thing to keep in mind before passing judgment on a product is to remember that it may not be meant for you. I mean that these tests are in every major dollar store because there are many women out there (and girls) that have very limited to no income that may find themselves in a need of a test. For these people 15 dollars is a lot. 18.99 is out of the question, and anything over 20 bucks is for “rich people”. This test (when used correctly) is just like any other test. It may take a little longer but at least it’s there for us if we need it.

  52. WE have been trying for 4 month’s now,I get the dollar test’s.Reading all of the comment’s has eased my mind about them,Because with as much as I test,I would go bankrupt buing the expensive one’s.I actually went to my neighborhood dollar store today to get one,and they were sold out!thank’s to everyone who has left a comment.

  53. With my son, I used a dollar store test three days after my period was due and it was an IMMEDIATE positive. There are no evaporation lines, unlike with the expensive, brand-name tests (tried those first…what a waste of money!), they give a negative or positive result instantly (I mean less than a minute) and leave no doubt in your mind. If it’s negative, you’ve only wasted a dollar, not $15.

People shouldn’t be so closed to things just because they cost less. Don’t get suckered into always buying things just because they are brand name! Smart mommies who are trying to conceive know how helpful it is to have a bunch of pregnancy tests at just $1 each. I would never, never use an expensive test again; no need.

It is true that you generally have to wait until the time your period is due, but you’re supposed to wait anyway with most tests if you want a truly accurate result.

  54. LAST MONTH ON JULY 13 I TOOK A FIRST RESPONSE TEST AND IT CAME UP NEGATIVE. MY PERIOD WAS DUE ON THE 14TH AND I WAS 2 DAYS LATE! I STAY ON FOR FOUR DAYS BUT IT WAS NOT NORMAL AS USUAL. NOW I’M DUE JULY 9 AND NO PERIOD. I TOOK A DOLLAR STORE BRAND AND IT CAME UP POSITIVE. I WENT TO THE DOCTOR YESTERDAY AND SHE TOLD ME I COULD BE FURTHER ALONE BECAUSE THAT TEST IS NOT A 5 DAY SOONER TEST! AND IT SHOULD HAVE GAVE ME A NEGATIVE RESPONSE SINCE I TOOK IT A DAY BEFORE MY CYCLE WAS DUE. I WILL FIND HOW FAR LONG I AM AFTER AN ULTRASOUND IS DONE!IF I AM THE FIRST RESPONSE TEST GAVE ME A NEGATIVE EVEN WHEN I WAS PREGNANT SO WHY NOT SAVE MONEY AND BUY A DOLLAR STORE BRAND!

  55. Yep sure would! Got my positives with both of my kids with the Baby test you buy at the Dollar General. Came out positive the both times the morning I was expecting my period so it`s pretty sensitive I would say! Another thing that`s great is the results on those baby`s do not fade! lol Still have mine from 3 and 4 years ago ;)

  56. They say it will take one-three minutes for the results on the Dollar Tree tests… it took 5 seconds.

LONG LIVE DOLLAR TREE PREGNANCY TESTS!

  57. they are bull crap. i took a dollar tree store test 5 times and they all said negitive. i went the following monday to pph and took a test and it was positive. 2 days later from a dollar store still negitive. so no they dont work and i was five weeks pregnte already. even the doc said next time just come there cause those test are not accurate at all and are just throw a ways from other stores.

  58. Does anyone really believe that the doctors’ offices pay $18/test? Of course not! It’s economics, plain and simple - people will pay $18, so they can charge that.

  59. why is it every post I find about this… everyone is happy that they’re preggo? I’m scared to death. I’m going to get the blood test tomorrow to make sure, but I didn’t get a positive on my dollar store test.

  60. why is it every post I find about this… everyone is happy that they’re preggo? I’m scared to death. I’m going to get the blood test tomorrow to make sure, but I did get a positive on my dollar store test.

  61. Natalea,
I felt that way with my first pregnancy. I was petrified of becoming a mother for almost the whole nine months (although I fell in love the first time I heard the heartbeat). Hope things turn out the way you want them.

  62. Yes–you can trust a D.T. pregnancy test, even as cheap as they may seem! My husband and I have been trying for 4 months now (no luck) and I was literally waisting away $$ on like 2 boxes of clear blue every month!…Every time to find out that it was negative! A friend of mine kept saying…go to the dollar store and get a bunch there, they work great! (She had good luck with them and the 2 boys she now has)
She also said that the dollar tree tests accept less hormone is your body..where the fancier ones need more in order to read it properly…
So, I bought 5 lol! I mean, why not?? Came up negative, but I think I’m a bit too soon….
Good luck everyone! Happy baby making ;) lol

  63. I have bought several of the drug store brands until I found the test at the $1 store. I dont see a reason to spend all the money for the fancy ones. The $1 store ones require a bit more work but it is totally worth saving all that money.

  64. I’ve used the dollar store pregnancy tests twice. It was negative when I wasn’t pregnant and positive when I was. They work just fine.

  65. I have been pregnant four times and the dollar store test worked every single time. Sometimes, I even got a positive before I missed my period. I swear by these test. They work like a charm.

  66. Yes. I have used $1 to confirm pregnancy - it is the same as all the rest with less packaging. You can dip in a cup of urine or drop the urine into the collection well - easy and sanitary compared to peeing on those sticks! I also use their ovulation tests to track my cycle since I am trying NOT to conceive. I think it is funny that people wouldn’t use them. The ones in the doctor’s office are the same thing almost with even less packaging, believe it or not. They cost them less than $1 each, and charge over $20 to stick it in your urine for you. BTW - The Dollar Tree brand as of 2009 is sensitive to 25miU which is one of the lowest ones on the market. Best wishes in 2010.

  67. I know two pregnant ladies who took a dollarama preggers test, both came out positive, and accurate. (multiple times) i took one (knowing i wasn’t pregnant) and it came out accurately negative. although, when it came down to REALLY finding out if >i< was pregnant, i spent the 12 dollars ^.^(it was positive! <3)

  68. yes they work the same i had two on my pregancy and they both were positive..there the same as the expensive ones

  69. I was short on cash when I suspected I was pregnant so I went to the dollar store and bought two of them they both said positive so just to make sure a week later I bought the clear blue digital and one was in error and one said pregnant. The dollar store ones are just as accurate as the expensive name brands some are plain some are fancy but they all have a strip inside that detect the hormone HcG.I would buy a dollar store one first and if u don’t trust it then buy an expensive one but you have to realize u may get a trial in error on the cheap one or the expensive one.

  70. My experience was also a “negative” one (literally). I tested the day my period was due and the Dollar Store test came up negative though I was feeling “different”. Disappointed, the next day I bought a CVS Pharmacy version of “Early Response” and it came up POSITIVE! I WAS actually pregnant!

Sounds like its a case of varying levels of HCG in women, which day you test, and how sensitive each test is. I’m sure there’s some Dollar Stores that carry old or defective ones too. The test I got wasn’t as sensitive as it claimed (no more than 25 I’d say), but it sounds like they’re pretty accurate if you don’t test too early, your HCG levels are high enough for it to detect, and the test isn’t from a bad batch. I personally am staying away from them from now on.

  71. i bought dollar store tests… way too many dollar store tests. the problem was the line was so light it looked like an evaporation line. i was so unsure that i kept testing over and over and over. finally got the digital ept. guess who’s pregnant? yep, me. i was seeing this thin line for days on the dollar store test, it wouldn’t really appear until at least 8 minutes. so confusing. i think i just wanted that YES or NO so bad. i should have just waited and tested with the digital.

  72. With my first pregnancy I didn’t have to worry about paying to test, I was working in a Dr’s office and just took one out the drawer (they cost about $.25 each, we would buy in bulk) and went into the bathroom. It was the first day of my scheduled period and it came out positive. Well I don’t work in that Dr. office anymore and have to buy my tests, I discovered the dollar store ones and bought a few (why not they are only $1) when I opened the box to try one out. I discovered they are practically identical to the ones we used when I worked at the Dr. office. I used one test and got a positive, it is very very rare to get a false positive. If you use the $1 one and get a negative maybe you aren’t pregnant or MAYBE your HCG level is not built up enough yet, a more expensive test can’t magically change your HCG level to be higher. Just wait a day or two and try the $1, why not you spend more than that on a cup of coffee :-)

  73. In My experience they are not Accurate I took one one day and it gave me a negative result and the next day I had a gyn appt which revealed I was Indeed Pregnant sooo

  74. Actually, my sister used a dollar store pregnancy test and it was accurate. She is now 22 weeks pregnant.

  75. Two days ago I took an equate $4 pregnancy test that I got from walmart and it gave me a plus. I just took the dollar test from the dollar store and it gave me a positive too. I am excited I believe I am 3 to 4 weeks along. I am boyond excited.

  76. I’ve used these test many times. I have never had one be wrong.

  77. Omg im so paranoid i bought Two dollar pregnancy test and both came out positive and then i was no scared i just wanted to make sure and went to the pharmacy and both a 10 dollar one and both said positive im freakying out and so hungry all thw time lol! I shud be be 3 -5 weeks

  78. i just took a dollar tree test and it came out neg, tho my period is a week late. Are they alot more accuret in the morning?

  79. I used them for months when I was trying for the first time. When I wasn’t pregnant, they were negative, and the day that I finally was, it was positive! I just took one again today, and it says I am expecting my second born! :)

  80. Hello Everyone!

My take on is that dollar store tests do work, they are just not always as sensitive as some others. In fact, they will only detect pregnancy if you body has produced at least 25 mIU of HCG - whereas First Response will detect pregnancy when you have only produced 18 mIU. So, that would explain why some ladies are saying that they tried a more expensive brand that came up negative - then days later they tried a dollar store test and it came up positive. Also, this does not mean that the dollar store tests are more accurate or sensitive. When the expensive test was tried, your body may not have produced enough HCG for it to detect the pregnancy - but by the time you tried the dollar store test, you had produced enough. I’m not saying this is always the case - all man made things produce error - but, just what I think. It just depends :)

  81. I used them! Very accurate.. I have a little boy to prove it ;)

  82. Hey everybody. I just wanted to let you know that the OVULATION preditor tests at dollar tree work great as well. I’m temping and charting and the predictors hit dead on. I’m looking forward to trying the dollar tree pregnancy tests for the first time this month =:)

  83. Thanks Tonya! I wonder how many of our readers have had success with an ovulation kit so you’ve inspired me to start a new post on the topic:

Ovulation Tests for One Dollar. Would you buy one?.

  84. not accurate. i took a digital EPT said “pregnant” a few days later i had to get a blood test at the doctor, to get a referral to a OB-GYN, and while waiting for my blood test i was like “omg wat if my test was wrong???!?!!?!?” so i went and got a cheap-o at the dollar tree. it said negaitve, lol im six weeks pregnant. stupid dollar tree. my doctor said “dont trust them some are right and some are wrong”

  85. It’s funny because i actually just bought one from dollar general 3 days ago, it came up positive. I didn’t want to believe it so i got a blood pregnancy test done at the hospital and.. Yep! you got it. i’m 6 Weeks pregnant!. I’ve heard a lot of stories about dollar store hpt’s that don’t work just about as much as i heard about ones that do. i guess you just have to get lucky to get an accurate one. But it really all depends on how sensitive the test is, and your level of HCG!

  86. just yesterday, my friend referred me to the $1 pg test because it was positive for her! she used a brand name to confirm it…but her result was true. she is now happily preggo at 16 weeks!

  87. i used the walmart brand first and it was a faded positive. then i toke two of the dollar store ones and they boy came out positive. they do work! and theyre way cheaper then the other ones!

  88. I think they work but the sensitivity may not be as good for some people as the more expensive ones. I have taken 4 digital tests (2 Clear Blue Easy & 2 EPT) over a course of 2 weeks and they all said “pregnant” immediately. I have tried a few dollar tree tests as well during this time and they have all read “negative” (although one had a faint line). I just think my HCG level is not high enough for the cheaper test. I know I’m preganant though…and super excited :)

  89. Actually, the dollar store tests have always been the most accurate for me.

  90. Ladies you have talked me into buying some of these tests. Im going to the dollar store to buy one tomorrow. Hope it comes back positive, kinda nervous. Thanks to all! :)

  91. I’ll let you know if they are accurate or not! All my $ Tree tests are negative, until 10 minutes when they turn positive with a faint but pink line - not shadowy…while at the same time, with the same sample all the first responses and EPT’s are positive, even the digital. The one first reponse is a rapid result which is said to detect 100 miu!!! The $ Tree say they detect at 25 miu. I have to retest on Wednesday and call for a confirmation appointment!!!!

  92. Update…not only did the ovulation predictor tests work, the pregnancy tests worked too =:) I’m 10 weeks pregnant right now. Good luck everyone. Save your money and use the dollar tree cheapies.

  93. Thanks for the update, Tonya. Congrats!!

  94. yea, i’m 15, and i dont drive. and there’s a dollar store in walking distance of my house that has pregnancy tests. helpful for young, jobless teens.

    wow…no. that sounds bad.
have protected sex when you’re young!!
    …..
    …..
    don’t have sex young!!

  95. Well, my Take is they are perfectly fine! I used them accurately, and actually i compared the box to some of the more expensive brands. Surprisingly, they were more sensitive then alot of the more expensive brands out there (not all of them mind you, but definetely a good chunk)

  96. Maybe if I was TTC for a long time. Tests can be spendy. If a cheap test came out positive, then I’d spring for an expensive one to double check.

  97. I used a dollar tree brand test in August 2006 and was delighted (and shocked!) to learn I was expecting my first little girl! I was about 6 weeks pregnant when I took the test and there was NO doubt about it. It was a clear positive ASAP.

  98. My sister has 3 boys and found out with the dollar store test. 100% accurate! :o)

  99. i took 6 all + im preggo! they work great

  100. They work alright!! My friend tested positive the day after her missed period. It was positive and she just had her baby a week ago.

  101. I have tried the $1 Store tests.
They have worked for me, and friends.
And being tight in money, its nice to spend only $1
